With cooling weather, fall's colors emerge in the park. Woodbine and oaks provide brilliant reds, while the cottonwoods, ashes and willows splash yellow throughout.
Fall Park Cleanup September 18, 2010
This year we decided to focus our cleanup efforts on the area extending from the Marion House (Bijou Street) to Uintah. We had two registration stations that morning (8 AM -noon), one at Marian House and the other at the parking area on Cache La Poudre and Mesa. It was a busy morning in the Park, with tours of Van Briggle and a CC track meet.
With the help of Keep Colorado Springs Beautiful we had nearly 60 volunteers. The weather was perfect, and we collected LOTS of trash. The Park's cleanliness continues to improve, though. This cleanup's trash haul was less than that in the Spring. Thanks to volunteers from local Mormon churches who volunteered. You were a great group!
Wild Bird Watching Walk September 2009
Tammy Bulow, member of the American Birding Association (you can visit their site at aba.org) led a group through the park for an early morning bird watching walk on Saturday September 26. As Tammy taught us, birders "watch with their ears," usually hearing the birds before they see them. Such was the case on Saturday.
Robins, red-shafted flickers, nuthatches, chickadees, house finches, titmice, blue jays and sparrows were all in attendance at the park. One species, the roufus-sided towhee, was heard but not seen.
The weather was perfect and Pikes Peak, in a fresh mantle of snow, was regal. Thanks to Tammy for a great walk!
